Grimshaw & Partners specified a multitude of WILA
luminaires for Millennium Point; providing an aesthetic and
functional lighting solution, appealing to its visitors by
highlighting various zones and creating a dramatic
eye-catching and exciting atmosphere.
The
Hub, the heart of Millennium Point and the building’s social
centrepiece, demanded a lighting solution to create dynamic
interest to the space. The 14m raked cantilever auditorium
which forms the soffit to the IMAXâ cinema is dramatically
illuminated using WILA’s special metal halide downlights
which were placed behind wire mesh and incorporated a 360o
blue cylinder glass lens.
These produced an interesting blue ‘starred’ effect
creating dramatic views throughout the building.
The ‘blue theme’ is carried through the open
walkways overlooking the atrium space by using WILA’s 1x42W
E26 recessed downlights with blue halo optics. As part of the
E Connect range they also offered ease of installation and
maintenance – vital in this particular location.
During the day the special ceiling, as used on Project
Eden, of inflatable 'pillows' of translucent laminated ETFE
foil allows light to pass through into the public atrium. At
night, this area is lit by WILA’s indirect “beam-light”
system consisting of narrow beam projectors aimed up at
deflection mirrors made up of individual “mirror clouds.”
Conventional uplighting would have been useless, as the
material is more or less transparent. The close offset of the
projector also highlights the glazed cylinder wall of the IMAXâ
Theatre giving it ‘life.’
And each mirror cloud is made up of 20 individually
adjustable mirrors so that the concourse, some 14m below, can
be evenly illuminated.
Lighting
solutions from WILA provided the flexibility to encompass the
requirements from the specifier and the demands of the
facility whilst adding visual flair to emphasise the stunning
design of the biggest millennium project outside
London
